University of Latvia
Riga Technical University and University of Latvia are two major universities in the country, both been established on the basis of Riga Polytechnical Institute and located in Riga. Another two important universities, which were established on the base of State University of Latvia, are Latvia University of Agriculture (established in 1939 on the basis of the Faculty of Agriculture) and Riga Stradiņš University (established in 1950 on the basis of the Faculty of Medicine) – both nowadays cover a variety of different fields. Daugavpils University is another significant centre of education. Latvia closed 131 schools between 2006 and 2010, which is a 12.9% decline, and in the same period enrolment in educational institutions has fallen by over 54,000 people, a 10.3% decline.
The Latvian policy of science and technology set out the long term goal – transition from labor-consuming economy to knowledge-based economy.By 2020 the government aims at a 1.5% GDP funding for research and development, with half of the investments coming from the private sector. Latvia develop their scientific potential on the basis of the existing scientific traditions, particularly in organic chemistry, medical chemistry, genetic engineering, physics, materials science and information technologies.The highest number of inventions, which are patented both nationwide and abroad, are made in the branch of medical chemistry.
Visa process of latavia:-
Citizens and residents (who have their residence permit issued by the official authorities) of following countries are eligible to apply for a short stay Schengen visa at the Embassy of Latvia in India:
Republic of India; Republic of Maldives; Republic of the Union of Myanmar; Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal.
If you wish to apply for a visa to Latvia you are required to follow the steps below:
Step 1 – Fill out/print/sign up the Online visa application form
Fill out the Online visa application form. Upon completion of the online application form, print the form and sign it. You will receive the application form number and the security code after filling in the online form.
NOTE: if the submitted application form is incomplete or contains false information, your visa application may be denied.
Step 2 – Collect all required documentation
Carefully check that you have collected all required documentation (Basic documents + Supporting Documents + Additional Documents). All the documents submitted in Hindu(or any language other than English or Latvian) are required to be translated in English or Latvian.
NOTE: the consular officer may request additional documents upon submission depending on each individual case.
Step 3 – Submit the visa application, visa fee and required documents at the Embassy in person

Schengen Visa fee is 4500 INR. The visa fee is non-refundable. The Embassy is not responsible for costs that can be incurred if a visa is refused.
NOTE: Please apply at least 2 weeks in advance and note that visa processing takes up to 10 working days.
Step 4 – Processing of Visa application and collection of the passport
The visa application processing time takes 10 working days. We will contact you in case something is missing in your application or if further information is required.
When you pick up your passport please bring your ID document. If you are picking up passport on behalf of somebody else together with your ID please submit the person s letter of authorisation
